Freedom caucus against McCarthy inspires conservatives to fight ’50 swamps in 50 states’

State-level Freedom Caucus lawmakers across the country are pushing to drain the swamp in their states after being inspired by 20 conservatives in the U.S. House of Representatives who pressed for concessions before allowing Kevin McCarthy to become the next Speaker of the House.

“Now we have 10 freedom caucuses across the states. And because of what the Freedom Caucus of the House of Representatives did in January during the speaker’s struggle, it created a huge amount of excitement among state legislators across the country,” Andrew Roth, president of the State Freedom Caucus Network, told Fox News Digital.

“One thing that people may not realize is that there are 50 swamps in 50 states,” Roth said. “The swamp,” he said, is not just in Washington, DC.

The State Liberty Caucus Network launched in late 2021 with the support of the influential House Liberty Caucus and politicians such as Mark Meadows. The group is made up of Republicans, according to Roth, who advocate “open, accountable, and limited government, a Constitution, and the rule of law, and policies that promote the freedom, security, and prosperity of all Americans.”

“We do this by providing public liberty classes with the tools, tactics, resources, and strategies to help them successfully advance growth-limiting public policy solutions,” Roth said.

He said the network gives state legislators “an opportunity to meet with each other and discuss how to stop bad legislation and push good legislation.” The network is doing well, says Roth, “because we’re only helping David a little in the fight against Goliath.”

He says the battle is being played out in South Carolina and South Dakota.

Fox News Digital reported last week that members of the South Dakota Freedom Caucus are challenging Gov. Christy Noem’s office, saying he “overstepped” his constitutional authority to sponsor legislation in the state legislature.

These members say Noem’s office is exploiting a loophole in the state’s legislative process that allows agencies to introduce bills in the legislature without a legislative sponsor, which some Republicans in the state say too often crosses the line into an area that should be controlled by legislators.

“Fight ensued in North Dakota legislature, and tensions are mounting,” the South Dakota Freedom Caucus said in a statement last week.

In South Carolina, members of the Freedom Caucus accuse statehouse Republican leaders of asking all Republicans to sign a “Soviet-style pledge” or face expulsion from the Republican Party.

Roth says that as their numbers grow, so will their influence in national politics.

“Where there were once 1,000 soft conservative voices, now there is a very loud, united, conservative voice in every state that we have a Freedom Caucus. And when that voice gets louder and louder and reinforces… the cause of freedom, it will put people in a difficult position,” he said.
