The four suspects appeared in court on January 10 and were released without bail.

During a news conference Monday, Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said he agreed with Mayor Eric Adams “that we have a crisis at the border and he has now migrated across the United States to the New York metropolitan area.”

“But I want to be clear: here in Nassau County, our police department will be vigilant to ensure that anyone who commits a crime is tracked down, caught and arrested,” Blakeman said.

Thousands of migrants were brought to New York by bus from the border after they arrived in the US seeking asylum.

The influx forced the city to open five emergency response and assistance centers and use hotel rooms to house people. The city has also tried to use cruise ships as temporary accommodation.

Adams called on federal and state legislators to help pay for the cost of migrants in New York. More than 39,000 asylum seekers have arrived in the Big Apple since spring.

The mayor said the crisis was costing the city, which already had an overburdened housing system, millions of dollars.
