Fort Pierce Hopes to Resurrect Boy Scout Troop 772

FORT PIERCE, Florida. Local leaders in Fort Pierce now want to re-establish Boy Scout Troop 772, a group that appears to be having a positive impact on teenagers.

“I see a need, and I’m not the kind of person who sees a need and doesn’t try to meet it,” said Jenny Champagne, who is working to reorganize the squad.

More than 10 years ago, Unit 772 began operations at Fort Pierce thanks to a group of people that included Champagne, Scott Van Duzer, and Jeff Isaac.

Jenny Champagne emphasizes the need to renew the detachment at Fort Pierce.

“All these people are gathered together, sheriff, fire chief. The mayors were great,” said Isaac, who is now a scout leader in Chicago. “These kids learned to swim in the Indian River College pool. I mean, otherwise they would never walk on this campus.”

The group then traveled to Washington DC and Tallahassee, meeting with leaders and even President Barack Obama.

“It was extremely impressive, think about it when you take on a person that no one has ever spoken to in a positive way,” Isaac said.

However, over the years the unit disbanded due to a lack of new members.

“The need is even greater, but our understanding of our community has also grown,” Champagne said. “This is our goal, this is our common goal – to change lives, and we have a formula.”
