Superintendent: $1.2 billion will be well spent

Fort Bend County voters will be asked to approve a $1.2 billion bond issue in May. Fort Bend ISD Inspector Christy Whitbeck, Ph.D. says there is still much to be done that parents and residents need to be aware of.

“We need a new roof, a chiller and HVAC system, a new floor, new furniture and the like,” she said. “More than half is what our high schools need to keep our old schools up to par.”

Whitbeck says several old schools will also be rebuilt if bail is approved. Dr. Whitbeck has a guest on Houston Newsmakers this week with Humbrel Marshall and talks about why voters should vote yes on May 6th.

Women of Color conference hopes to improve dismal statistics

Every fourth woman in business gets to the top management, where all management decisions are made. For women of color, that number drops to one in 20. The 2023 Colored Women’s Conference hopes to change some of these grim statistics.

Donna Cole is the founder, president and CEO of Cole Chemical, a business she started at the age of 27. She will be one of the speakers at the conference and says she clearly has a lot of work to do.

“Fifty percent of the businesses that open are owned by women — 1,800 businesses a day,” she said. “Half of them are women of color. Therefore, we believe that it is very important for us to promote business methods, skills and leadership.”

AI on track to cut millions of jobs

It’s only a matter of time before some people are replaced in their jobs with artificial intelligence and automation. So says Patrick Dix, who has a PhD in science and information systems. This week he is a guest on the Houston Newsmakers.

“The goal of any company is to do more with less,” he said. “Thanks to the way technology advances affect the world, companies can now do more tasks remotely, they can improve them. They can invest more money in research, and their overall goal is to increase profits.”
