Former HISD elementary school teacher under investigation for alleged child sexual abuse

The former Sutton Elementary School teacher is under investigation on suspicion of sexually abusing students, parents say. CPS and HISD are investigating.

HOUSTON. A former elementary school employee is under investigation for allegedly sexually abusing students. According to the principal of the school in a letter sent to parents, they received several complaints.

Some parents here tell me they found out about it at a meeting the principal held on Monday morning. They say family members of the alleged victims spoke up.

Parents of Sutton Elementary School are very concerned that a former teacher at their school is under investigation for alleged sexual assault.

“It’s scary to think about it,” said Janet Gomez, the mother of a student attending Sutton Elementary.

Another mother of three little girls tells me that she is scared to think that her girls could come into contact with this teacher. In Spanish, she said she was talking to her daughters and they don’t really understand what’s going on, but she hopes they weren’t victims.

And that seems to be the problem, in a letter sent home to the parents, the headmaster doesn’t give many details and the parents wonder why.

“I would really like whoever it is to at least let those parents in this class know or whoever has been in contact with this teacher so that in this way parents can do their own work of asking their children what happened anything else, and the whole truth may be revealed. come out,” Gomez said.

The letter states that the defendant is no longer an employee of the district. The letter also states that HISD and HISD police are investigating. So does Child Protective Services.

In the interest of student privacy, HISD states that it cannot provide additional information to parents.

“You’ve been working with kids all these years and finally someone spoke up,” Gomez said. “You never know what other problems could have happened.”

The school district said in a statement…

“HISD takes these situations very seriously and the safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our absolute top priority. This person retired in July 2022 and is therefore no longer employed by the county. Due to the Family’s Educational Rights Privacy Act (FERPA) and pending investigation, HISD will not provide additional information at this time.”

CPS says they are also investigating. Here is the statement they provided:

“Child Protective Services is working with law enforcement to investigate allegations of sexual abuse at Sutton Elementary School. Once our investigation is complete, the results will be sent to Sutton Elementary School, Houston ISD, and the Texas Education Agency.” – Melissa Lanford, DFPS spokeswoman

So far, no criminal cases have been initiated. But many parents want to understand why HISD and the HISD police have taken so long to file charges, as parents tell us that some victims came forward as early as October last year.

According to the parents, this teacher has worked at the school for at least seven years.

Parents say that during this investigation they found that the cameras at the school were not working properly.
