Former Gov. Paterson slams government over migration crisis and calls some southern states ‘benefit recipients’

Former New York Gov. David Paterson slammed the federal government on Sunday for not reimbursing the Big Apple for the migrant crisis, while calling some southern states “benefit recipients.”

The Democrat said at WABC 770 AM’s Cat Roundtable that New York City is paying more than its fair share to meet the housing needs of the 50,000 new migrants who flooded the area last year, while Republican-led states just come to your senses, show your hands.

“States like South Carolina, which receives $43 billion more than they pay in taxes from the federal government, and Alabama, which receives $35 billion more than they pay into our Treasury,” Paterson said, accepting at John Catsimatidis, citing examples of states, supposedly not pulling their weight.

“So here are the people lecturing us about self-help when they are the biggest beneficiaries of public money,” he said.

“If they weren’t states but people, we would call them welfare recipients.”

Paterson also touched on state issues, saying Gov. Kathy Hochul was recently “disrespected” by Albany lawmakers, who he claimed want to add tens of billions of dollars to her 2024 budget proposal.

The former governor did not say what is involved in the additional $50 billion in proposed spending. Hohul’s current plan calls for $227 billion in spending.

But he noted that Hochul “reshuffled her staff” – presumably referring to her loading Acting State Budget Director Sandra Beatty instead of Bob Megna last month – during negotiations with members of her own party, which he said was right. step.

“While it may seem ominous that she did something like this, I see it as a good sign,” Paterson said. “I take it as a good sign that she is listening to someone telling her she needs to better organize her legislative agenda.”

Paul Harlem said negotiations with the legislature are especially important because New York will not receive any funding from the federal government due to the pandemic in the next fiscal year.

“I feel that she is not respected. Um, and, and I think she’s still trying to be professional and trying to work with them carefully, but it’s a very critical time.”
