Former Braves head of scouting Dana Brown named new Astros CEO

HOUSTON — Longtime baseball executive Dana Brown has been hired as the new general manager of the Astros, Astros owner and chairman Jim Crane announced Thursday.

Brown joins the Astros after spending the last four seasons (2019-22) with the Atlanta Braves organization as their vice president of scouting. In this role, he oversaw several successful draft picks in which the Braves selected influential players such as outfielder Michael Harris, right-handed pitcher Spencer Strider, and infielder Vaughn Grissom. In 2022, Harris received the National League Rookie of the Year award, with Strider coming in second. The Braves’ success in recent years, which includes five straight division titles and a World Series championship in 2021, is largely the result of a solid truss system.

“We are delighted to have Dana join our organization,” Crane said. “He brings championship-level experience to our team and is perfect for us to continue winning on and off the field. We welcome Dana and his family to the Astros.”

Prior to joining the Braves, Brown spent nine seasons (2010–18) with the Toronto Blue Jays as a special assistant to the general manager. During this time, the Blue Jays earned the American League East Division title in 2015 and a Wild Card spot in 2016. The 2015 postseason performance was the Blue Jays’ first since 1993.

Prior to his tenure in Toronto, Brown served nine seasons (2001-09) as Director of Scouting for the Nationals/Expos franchise. During his tenure, the Nationals/Expos drafted over 40 players who would go on to appear in the Major Leagues. The seven players selected during this period will receive All-Star status, including Ian Desmond, Steven Strasburg and Ryan Zimmerman.

Brown’s career also includes an eight-year stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he served as their intelligence chief and comptroller on the east coast.
