Florida man charged with killing Kentucky hotel employee after couple refused to give him lighter

A Florida man was arrested for murder on Saturday after allegedly attacking a couple in the parking lot of a Kentucky hotel and then shooting an employee, according to the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office.

In addition to first-degree murder, Robert Pannell, 55, was also charged with assault, wanton danger, disorderly conduct, threats and resisting arrest.

Law enforcement officials were called to a Best Western hotel in southwestern Kentucky about an active shooter around 9:48 am Saturday.

A Paducah police officer found Pannell in the parking lot and held him up, while a sheriff’s deputy began a search of the hotel and found the officer on the ground floor with multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body.

Detectives learned during the investigation that Pannell allegedly attacked the couple in the parking lot after they failed to give him a lighter.

He then entered the hotel with a gun and, according to the sheriff, opened fire indiscriminately, killing an employee. No one else was hit by firearms.

Pannell, from Palm Coast, Florida, was staying at the hotel at the time of the shooting.

According to prison records, he is being held at McCracken County Jail on $2.5 million bail.
