Florida hotel resident killed by forklift during storm repairs

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Florida (AP) – A guest at an oceanfront hotel in Florida has died after being hit by a forklift working on repairs after the storm, authorities said.

The 62-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was shot Monday while walking through the parking lot of the Beach Haven Inn, said Michael Fowler, director of public safety for Daytona Beach Shores.

The hotel is located next to the Atlantic Ocean and was heavily damaged during Tropical Storm Yang which hit the area in September.

The forklift was transporting roofing material for a hurricane repair, Fowler said, and the driver apparently did not see the woman before running over her. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital and died shortly thereafter, officials said.

The police are investigating and have notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
