Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ speech to Texas Republicans sparked interest in the 2024 presidential race.

DALLAS (CBSNewsTexas.com) “You could say that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is doing the political equivalent of the Texas Two-Phase Maneuver.

First, he will address the Harris County Republicans in Houston on Friday night, and then at the Dallas County GOP’s Reagan Day Dinner at the Omni Hotel on Saturday night.

Although DeSantis has not announced he is running for president, SMU political science professor Matthew Wilson called his visit a step in the race for the White House in 2024. “This certainly shows that he has national ambitions. This certainly indicates that he is preparing for the presidential race.”

The media is not invited to DeSantis’ speeches.

Janie Manning was an early supporter of former President Donald Trump. “President Trump was a great leader, a great president.”

But she said she now hopes DeSantis will challenge Trump in the primary. “I just think DeSantis will bring a fresh start to the Republican Party and could get more votes from Democrats and some Republicans who won’t vote for Trump.”

Manning praised DeSantis’ work as governor of Florida, his service in the US Navy, and his work roots, among other things.

Wayne Richard said he continues to support Trump because of his track record as president. “We saw all the successes, the economy was doing so well, no wars, he just did a great job as president. He has proven what he says he can do.”

DeSantis’ speech came a year before the Texas primary, which takes a long time in politics, but the presidential field will solidify in the next few months.

In Republican polls, Trump and DeSantis are well ahead of former US ambassador to the UN and South Carolina governor Nikki Haley, who ran in the GOP primary last month, and another potential candidate, former Vice President Mike Pence.

Professor Wilson said, “DeSantis is clearly former President Trump’s archrival.”

Richard said DeSantis should not run for president next year, but instead should be loyal to Trump, who supported him during his first primary run for governor. “The loyalty component is very important.”

He said DeSantis should wait until 2028. “Keep Florida red, build it even better, and then after four years when Trump retires, run.”

Manning disagreed. “There are so many people who don’t want Trump even though he was a great president. There are only people who are against him and we can’t risk losing another election, we just can’t.”

Professor Wilson said DeSantis’ speeches this weekend show just how important Texas is to the Republican Party. “There is no richer source of funding, delegates, votes for someone running for the Republican presidential nomination than Texas. Of course, Harris County and Dallas County are the two most significant population centers here.”
