Firefighters put out a fire in an abandoned building in Salinas

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) — Several fire engines arrived at the scene of a fire at an abandoned building on Sanborn Place in Salinas early Wednesday morning.

By the time firefighters arrived, a significant amount of flames and smoke was coming out of the building.

Some witnesses told fire brigades that they believed there were people inside the burning building, prompting an even greater backlash.

“We did have some difficulty with forced entry,” Salinas Fire Battalion Chief Cary Lesh said. “This building is boarded up because there is no one in it, so we had to take a little time to remove the plywood.”

According to Lesh, after that the crews were able to quickly put out the fire.

He adds that after the fire was put out, there was no one in the building, and crew members or civilians were not injured.

Lesh says the agency has responded to multiple calls for warmer weather over the past few weeks as temperatures remain low at night.
