Fire and Ice: Orlando Firefighters Hockey Club to Host Annual Charity Tournament

ORLANDO, Florida. – When it comes to the fire service, there are brother and sister in the profession. There is also rivalry that can be shown at sporting events, and on January 23 the puck will be thrown for good reason.

Hosted by the Orlando Firefighters Hockey Club, the Battle for the Badges hockey tournament will feature 30 first responder teams from across the US and Canada. The tournament was first held in 2003 to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association, but for 19 years the event has raised funds for the families of those who donated themselves.

“This is not only a financial side, but also an opportunity for team members to pay their respects on the ice,” said Lt. Bradley Shanks, OFHC president. “It’s part of therapy to help move forward when we’ve lost a loved one.”

The OFHC is made up of firefighters from Orlando. Along with its mission to financially support first aid families, the nonprofit also helps those struggling with cancer, PTSD, and other work-related injuries.

“Our whole mission is to raise the fallen, and that doesn’t necessarily mean someone has passed away,” Shanks said. “Great outlet – hockey.”

The Battle for the Badges runs from January 23-26 at the RDV Sportsplex Ice Den in Orlando. For information on tournaments or donations, visit OFDhockey.com or follow the club on Instagram, @orlando_firefighter_hockey.
