Files hacked in Oakland ransomware attack leaked online

Files taken from the city of Oakland by an unauthorized third party leaked online, city officials said on Friday, about a month after the ransomware attack.

The city said the hackers released some information, but did not specify what it was.

“We are working with third parties… and looking at the files involved to determine their content. If we determine that any individual’s personal information is involved, we will notify those individuals in accordance with applicable law,” a city spokesperson said in a statement.

They added that they take the hack seriously and will hold those responsible to account.

A ransomware attack occurs when someone encrypts files and demands a ransom for their decryption.

The attack was reported on Feb. 8 and essentially left residents unable to file police reports online, pay taxes, or send emails to council members.

The following is the full statement from the City of Auckland:

“While an investigation into the extent of the incident affecting the City of Auckland is ongoing, we recently became aware that an unauthorized third party obtained certain files from our network and released some of this information. We are working with third parties and law enforcement on this matter and review the relevant files to determine their content. If we determine that any person’s personal information is involved, we will notify those persons in accordance with applicable law.

Protecting the privacy of the information we hold is a responsibility we take seriously. We will continue to work diligently to investigate and resolve this incident, working with our expert teams to further enhance our security in the future.”
