Fight for freedom: a year later, residents of the Northern port continue to rally for Ukraine

NORTH PORT, Florida. On Friday, as the war in Ukraine continued, support in southwest Florida also continued.

Supporters living in North Port were seen rallying along Biscayne Drive and Tamiami Trail.

Marina Savage, who moved to the United States from Ukraine when she was 25, spoke to Fox 4 about the ongoing support.

“This is a David vs. Goliath fight and David is clearly winning right now,” Savage said.

Savage said that just as David in the Christian Bible fought Goliath using only a slingshot, her slingshot is her custom-made Ukrainian clothing.

Savage said her clothes were put on public display during a rally for all supporters, just a year after Russian troops invaded her homeland.

On Friday, Savage said the message they send home is different now.

“This is a celebration of the unshakable spirit of Ukraine,” Savage said.

Savage said the past year has been tough as she tries to bring her father home to her new home in North Port.

“He said that this is my land, I have a garden here, I’m not going to give my house to some Russian, I’m going to sit and stay here,” Dikar said.

An unbreakable spirit is why, according to Savage, the North Port community continues to advocate for Ukraine.

Savage said it was a reminder of why we must always fight for freedom.

“In America we think, ‘Oh, that’s impossible, it’s just from some fantasy movie,’ and now it’s happening to us. I just want to tell you that nothing is impossible,” said Savage.

That’s why Savage said everyone should stand together.

“We are still standing, we are still not going to give up, we are fighting and winning,” said Savage.
