FDOT honors those who have made an impact on our society

Florida – The Florida Department of Highway Highlights African Americans who have made a big impact on the transportation industry as part of Black History Month.

The first is Garrett August Morgan, the inventor of the modern traffic light. Before Morgan’s invention, there were stop-go signals.

However, when Morgan invented the third position, it allowed traffic to stop in both directions and gave pedestrians the ability to cross the street more safely.

His invention would later be used throughout the US until the automatic red, yellow, and green traffic lights we have today hit the market.
