Florida – The Florida Department of Transportation is focusing on African Americans and their impact on the industry in honor of Black History Month.
William Thaddeus Coleman, Jr. was the first African American Secretary of Transportation in 1975.
During his tenure, Coleman issued a formal statement on national transportation policy and established the Transportation Bureau of Materials.
These programs were designed to oversee pipeline safety and hazardous materials shipping programs.
Colman was also involved in the construction of Interstate 66, which serves as the main highway in the Washington, D.C. region.
