Fast-moving system could bring first snow to Northeast cities

A fast-moving system will sweep across the Northeast on Sunday and Monday when snow could whiten the ground as far south as the lower Hudson Valley of New York and southern New England for the first time this season.

Much of the Interstate 95 corridor has yet to pick up measurable snowfall this season. While the majority of this upcoming snow will remain confined to the interior Northeast, the FOX Forecast Center can’t rule out some snow trying to sneak into a few of the larger cities.

“As we go into Sunday night, that’s when it could get interesting for New York City. Could we see our first snow?” FOX Weather meteorologist Britta Merwin said. “Well, it’s possible, but the latest trends look like most of the snow is going to be north of the I-95 corridor.”

You can see on the FOX Weather FutureTrack below that the rain/snow line late Sunday night and early Monday morning will most likely set up north of the Big Apple, though it could be snowing as nearby as the lower and mid-Hudson Valley, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

A light dusting of snow is also possible as far south as extreme northern New Jersey.

Between 1 and 3 inches of snow is expected from Sunday into Monday across the interior Northeast, including much of New York state, northern Pennsylvania and a large swath of New England. Locally higher amounts of 3 to 5 inches are possible in some of the region’s higher elevations.

A light dusting of snow is also possible as far south as extreme northern New Jersey, but closer to I-95, there will likely be more rain than snow, especially from New York City and points south.

Regardless, if enough cold air is available to change the rain over to snow in cities such as Bridgeport in Connecticut and Providence in Rhode Island, it could be their first measurable snowfall of the season.

“This is not a massive storm, but it could be the first snow for many folks across the Northeast,” Merwin said. “Western New York has been slammed – we had that lake-effect snow event that was 7 feet of snow. But if you live in Connecticut, you really haven’t seen much snow, and you could be seeing it Sunday into Monday morning.”
