Family Seeks Answers as Orlando Police Fatally Shoot Man

ORLANDO, Fla. – The grieving family of a man fatally shot by the Orlando Police Department last Monday made an impassioned plea for answers regarding the incident during a somber vigil held on Sunday. The poignant gathering took place at the bustling intersection of Jefferson Street and Orange Avenue, where 26-year-old Derek Diaz tragically lost his life.

Heartbroken and tormented by the absence of Diaz, Sonja Nava, the mother of Diaz’s daughter, tearfully expressed their anguish, stating, “His daughter had her first day of soccer today, and he wasn’t there. She’s asking for him, and we have nothing to tell her.” The profound impact of Diaz’s absence was palpable, casting a deep shadow of sorrow over the vigil.

According to statements released by the Orlando Police Department, officers were engaged in “proactive patrol” in the area when they became suspicious of Diaz, who was driving a vehicle, purportedly involved in drug-related activities. Tragically, the encounter swiftly escalated, resulting in Diaz’s tragic demise. The police department claims that Diaz failed to comply with the officers’ commands, and in what they deemed a swift movement resembling an attempt to retrieve a firearm, one of the officers fired the fatal shot.

Disturbingly, no firearm was recovered from the vehicle, undermining the initial assumptions made by law enforcement. However, the police did find drugs during their investigation, although no specific details about the nature of the drugs or the location they were discovered in have been divulged. Despite multiple attempts by News 6 to gather further information from the Orlando Police Department regarding these crucial inquiries, they have thus far remained unresponsive.

Unsurprisingly, Diaz’s family finds themselves shrouded in profound darkness, with their questions and concerns left unanswered. In an endeavor to shed light on the tragic incident, the family’s attorney, Benjamin Crump, accompanied them in demanding the release of the body-worn camera footage. In response, the Orlando Police Department issued a statement promising to make the video available within 30 days.

Seeking expediency and transparency, the family reiterated their call for the immediate release of the video during Sunday’s vigil. Nava pleaded for clarity, saying, “We just want to see the video. It seems like they’re holding onto it. Why are they holding onto it? Why can’t we see it? Why can’t we, as the family, at least see it?” The anguish and frustration felt by the family were echoed by others in attendance, with one individual imploring, “How are we supposed to feel protected by y’all when we don’t even know what y’all are doing, for real?”

In the wake of this devastating incident, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave until the conclusion of the ongoing investigation conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. As the Diaz family and their supporters continue their relentless pursuit for truth and justice, the emotionally charged atmosphere of the vigil underscores the urgent need for transparency and accountability in cases involving the use of force by law enforcement.
