Family and friends remember victim killed in mass shooting in Half Moon Bay

Friends and family gathered Thursday at a memorial in Half Moon Bay to pay tribute to one of the victims of Monday’s mass shooting.

Friends and family of Marciano Martinez Jimenez came to the site of the public memorial in the center of Half Moon Bay to pray, light a candle and talk about the farm worker.

“My family, they are very sad. so upset about the whole situation that happened, right?” said Catalina Maia Martinez, a family friend.

Martinez’s sister was Marciano’s daughter-in-law. She used her time at Mac Dutra Plaza to post on Facebook Live to friends and family in both the Bay Area and Mexico.

“They are sad. empty in their hearts,” Martinez said.

Jimenez lived in Pillar Ridge Mobile Home Park in Moss Beach. He also played in a local band.

The victim’s family said he always had a smile and a positive attitude.

Jimenez’s neighbor, Olga Velazquez, said it was too painful for words. She added that she took English and computer lessons with him at a local college, and said he was always looking to improve his life on the farm.

She also called him brother.

Francisca Sanchez told NBC Bay Area that Jimenez was from the same Mexican state of Oaxaca. She remembers how he always walked his dog in the mobile home park.

NBC Bay Area reported that the only survivor of the massacre, Pedro Pérez, underwent another operation today at Stanford Hospital on Thursday.

The Mexican consulate is working with Perez and his family to ensure they receive all the consular assistance they need.
