Eric Adams pleads with Albany to help fight marijuana as illegal stores reach 1,500

Hizzoner says: Just say no!

Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday lashed out at illegal weed sellers but admitted his hands are tied when it comes to cracking down on the state’s lax laws.

“We have to focus on this marijuana,” Adams angrily told reporters at City Hall. “This marijuana is a real problem! And we have to make sure we can’t have people [make] mockery of our system!

“We’re going in, we’re doing enforcement, and I think we can only issue a fine of $250,” he added. “I thought it was less. But that’s the cost of doing business [to sellers]. And our policemen cannot take the necessary measures.”

Under a 2021 New York law legalizing recreational marijuana, bad actors only get a criminal subpoena accompanied by paltry fines.

Adams drew attention to an exclusive Post report last week exposing an unlicensed marijuana shop blatantly selling herbal products across the street from City Hall, which was closed only after being raided twice.

“We’re going to put the package [of bills] together just to deal with cannabis so it doesn’t get out of hand. We have about… 1,500 illegal cannabis shops,” the mayor said. “And it’s not only that they sell illegal cannabis, but also that they are targeting young people!”

“Kids get high on their way to school,” Adams ranted. “Kids take these gummy bears. I must be old fashioned. People do not understand what is happening in our country and in our city. We must begin reorientation!”

State cannabis law prohibits legal sellers from advertising cannabis products with attractive packaging or colors, but The Post found several illegal sellers displaying products with harmless names like “Cotton Cluster”.

“These kids wake up in the morning, go to the store, buy gummy bears laced with marijuana, and then go to school and study? And they open around us? the mayor was outraged. “No no no! We’re losing our grip.

“And since I say no to it, I must be the bad guy. No! I just know what it takes to raise healthy children and families,” Adams continued, “and we have created an environment in this city and country where we harm our children. We are always talking about building a better planet for our children, we must create better children for our planet!”

In addition to hunting children for sale, illegal marijuana sellers have themselves become prime targets for robberies, with the NYPD responding to a series of shootings across the city last month.

Adams wants to make it easier for city officials in Albany to immediately close illegal tobacco shops and increase fines.

Even far-left Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has joined the cause, vowing to punish homeowners who knowingly rent out spaces to weed dealers without a license.

Meanwhile, City Sheriff Anthony Miranda’s office is handling the bulk of the enforcement effort, seizing more than $4 million worth of illegal products last year.
