Endangered Ridley Kemp’s sea turtles are back in the wild

SOUTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FL. (WSVN) – Six of Ridley Kemp’s eight recovered sea turtles were taken by Lucas Rosemary, head of the Miami Zoo Sea Turtle Hospital, to a site near Cape Canaveral, where they were released on Friday.

On Dec. 9, the Miami Zoo Turtle Hospital received eight Kemp Ridley sea turtles, stunned from the cold, that had been airlifted from the Cape Cod area.

The turtles were subjected to a dramatic drop in temperatures in the northeast Atlantic Ocean and suffered from a host of problems ranging from exhaustion, abrasions, dehydration and swollen eyes.

Kemp’s Ridley turtle is the world’s smallest and endangered species of sea turtle due to the illegal collection of their eggs and ending up in nets.

After several weeks of meticulous care, six out of eight people made a wonderful recovery, which was reflected in significant weight gain and increased mobility, as well as healing of abrasions.

Each of them was examined, measured and transponders were inserted for future identification.

Ridley Kemp’s sea turtles range from the Gulf of Mexico to the east coast of Nova Scotia, where they feed mainly on crabs and other shellfish.
