Emiliano Grillo wins Colonial in a playoff, Steve Stricker wins the second senior major at the PGA

Emiliano Grillo clinched Argentina’s first PGA Tour victory in over seven years after a thrilling duel with Adam Schenk at the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas. Grillo outmaneuvered his competitor in the second playoff round after sinking a decisive 5-foot birdie putt, redeeming himself after a significant misstep with a double bogey on the final hole. Schenk missed his opportunity for the title as his 20-foot birdie putt went off course, resulting in a score of 72. Meanwhile, Harry Hall fell short of the playoffs with a 73, and Scottie Scheffler shared a similar fate. Grillo’s triumphant victory catapulted him into the top 60 in the world within two weeks.

At the Colonial, Grillo initially appeared poised for victory with a promising two-shot lead on the 18th hole. However, his fortunes changed when his tee shot landed in a culvert and subsequently plummeted around 150 yards into shallow water. Despite this setback, Grillo recovered from a penalizing bad chip and double bogey to finish with an impressive 68.

In Frisco, Texas, Steve Stricker secured his second major senior victory of the year at the Senior PGA Championship by defeating Padraig Harrington in a playoff round on the first hole. Stricker concluded with a 3-under 69, while Harrington finished with 70, forcing a playoff between the two bottom Ryder Cup captains with his birdie on the par-5 18th. Despite Harrington’s valiant attempts, his drive veered into the thick grass right of the fairway, resulting in a premature conclusion to the playoff.

This tournament marked the debut of the Fields Ranch East as a major event venue, showcasing the new PGA of America headquarters in Frisco, Texas, situated roughly 35 miles north of Dallas. The venue is set to host the PGA Championship in 2027 and 2034, marking a new era in the history of this prestigious competition.

Stewart Cink finished his senior debut with a stunning birdie-eagle, concluding with a commendable 69, a mere two shots behind Stricker. Stricker’s latest victory secures him a spot in next year’s PGA Championship at Valhalla, adding to his six majors among his 14 PGA Tour Champions wins. Grillo’s remarkable triumph and Stricker’s seasoned victory contribute to an enthralling weekend of golf that will go down in history.
