The new Earthjustice Gulf Regional Office works across all three core areas of the Earthjustice program: healthy communities, climate and energy, and land, oceans and wildlife. In cooperation with our customers and partners, we will fight for clean air and water and fight the unfair burden of pollution; we will fight for a just transition to clean energy and for climate solutions that work for everyone; and we will fight to protect the magnificent lands, waters and wildlife of the Persian Gulf. Earthjustice has a significant amount of work in the Gulf and this new office will expand our capabilities in this critical region.

The position of Senior Associate is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and creative lawyer to use their skills, the power of law and the power of partnership to help deliver meaningful results for the Gulf region. The Senior Attorney will have the opportunity to contribute to the strategic growth of our litigation and advocacy list, support existing partners and develop new partnerships in the fight for a healthy and just Persian Gulf.

This position can be filled from Texas, Louisiana or Mississippi and supports our work throughout the Gulf region.

Responsibilities

  • Handle complex cases and complete a full range of court tasks, including fact-finding, legal research, disclosure, briefing, witness training, litigation and oral defense, and otherwise handle new and existing cases in state or federal courts and administrative tribunals from inception to the end.
  • Develop cases and legal defense strategies in collaboration with clients, other attorneys, experts and partners to support the goals of the Gulf Regional Chapter and the strategic vision of Earthjustice.
  • Collaborate on team problem solving, litigation strategy, project management and trial work.
  • Seek new allies and partner with community groups, tribal entities, workers, advocacy organizations, coalitions, and more to represent them.
  • Help develop and implement effective communications and, where appropriate, legislative strategies and act as a spokesperson for Earth Justice, clients and partners.
  • Supervise the work of assistant attorneys, interns, and litigation assistants, and train and mentor assistant attorneys, including improving their skills during legal defense.
  • Support and contribute to a positive, respectful, supportive and collaborative work environment and help advance Earthjustice’s efforts to create a diverse and inclusive workplace based on equity and fairness.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively with colleagues across Earthjustice, including Litigation, Communications, Development, Policy, and Law.
  • Participate in learning and professional development opportunities appropriate to the position and organization.

Qualification

  • Lawyer with 6 years of experience in litigation and the ability to handle litigation from start to finish, independently if necessary.
  • A law graduate is admitted or willing to apply for admission to the Texas bar.
  • Excellent judicial skills, including legal research, written, analytical and oral advocacy skills.
  • Ability to develop cases and effectively manage court files.
  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration with the client’s partners, as well as lead a litigation team.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a diverse set of clients and partner organizations in the legal and advocacy profession.
  • Ability to work effectively with technicians.
  • Strong skills in communicating judicial and advocacy goals and media messages.
  • Strong and demonstrated initiative, judgment, creativity, flexibility and work ethic.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to the needs and problems of people from different cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
  • The ability and passion to help create a diverse, fair and inclusive work culture that encourages and celebrates difference.
  • Willingness and ability to effectively supervise and deliberately mentor early career employees in connection with litigation and advocacy projects, and to help create an inclusive and supportive work environment.
  • Ability and willingness to travel as needed, including to handle cases, appear in court, and meet with clients and partners.
  • A commitment to serving the public interest and a passion for the role of justice on earth and its mission.

Wages in Earthjustice are determined by experience level and location.

Salary in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi: $142,000+
