DPS urges Texans to avoid travel to Mexico during spring break after kidnapping of four Americans

HOUSTON – The Texas Department of Public Safety is urging Texans to avoid traveling to Mexico during spring break and beyond due to ongoing violence across the country.

“Drug cartel violence and other criminal activity poses a serious security threat to anyone crossing Mexico right now,” said DPS director Stephen McCraw. “We have an obligation to inform the public about the safety, risks and threats of travel. Based on the volatile nature of cartels and the violence we see there; we urge people to avoid traveling to Mexico at this time.”

The United States government has also issued recent travel warnings for Mexico. Travelers are advised to read the latest warnings Online. In addition, US citizens who choose to travel to Mexico are strongly encouraged to register at the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate prior to departure.

DPS said it understands that many people travel to Mexico without incident, but serious risks cannot be ignored.

All travelers are advised to carefully research any planned trips and, again, consider postponing or canceling their trip to Mexico at this time.

The warning came after four Americans were abducted and two were killed on their trip to Matamoros from Texas.
