Dog Surf Competition Approved by Flagler Beach Authorities

FLAGLER BEACH, Florida. – During a meeting Thursday night, the Flagler Beach commissioners approved a dog surfing competition expected to take place in May.

The organizers of the Hang 8 Dog Surfing event wanted to hold a dog surfing competition at Flagler Beach, but the city says no dogs are allowed on the beach.

However, committee chairman Eric Cooley, a member of the Hang 8, took the matter to the committee with a surf dog named Wednesday in tow.

“I wanted to invite her so everyone could get to know her because Wednesday is the real founder of Hang 8. People just went along with her idea,” Cooley said.

Cooley brought in a surfboard to demonstrate Wednesday’s surfing skills during the commission’s meeting and show how dogs can surf at the event.

According to Cooley, Wednesday has been hitting the waves for years, and she showed off her skills while wearing a dog-sized life jacket.

The commission ultimately granted the event a temporary waiver, allowing organizers to keep dogs on the beach.

On the event’s Facebook page, the date of the event is listed as May 20.
