Documents: Daughter pleads not guilty to attempted murder of mother with pills in Salinas

SALINAS, CA (KION-TV) January 23, 2023 at 4:34 pm– A woman accused of attempted murder of her own mother pleaded not guilty in court to all charges against her.

Court documents obtained by KION say Whitney Stolich, 47, has been charged with three felony charges by the Monterey County District Attorney’s office. The charges are conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted murder, and attempted harm to a dependent elderly/adult.

On January 19, Stolic attempted to conspire with another person to kill her mother using “crushed pills with a hammer,” according to court documents.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office also arrested Whitney’s brother James Stolich for conspiracy, attempted murder and elder abuse, but court documents do not list him as an accomplice. His name is not on the Monterey County Jail log or on the Monterey County Court Portal.

When asked about this, the Monterey County District Attorney’s office replied that the investigation was ongoing and they could not comment further.

Court documents also say that Whitney Stolich committed elder abuse “under circumstances and conditions that could result in serious bodily injury and death.” They also allege that she deliberately caused and allowed her 80-year-old dependent mother to suffer.

Whitney Stolich will next appear in court on January 26 to see if she can reduce bail.

Sister and brother arrested for attempted murder of their own mother in Salinas

Deputies arrested two siblings for the alleged attempted murder of their own mother on the 1000 block of Monterey-Salinas Route 68 on Jan. 19.

Deputies responded around 9:30 p.m. to reports of family unrest. Investigators at the scene had probable reason to believe that the victim’s daughter, Whitney Stolich, 47, from Topanga, tried to kill her.

She was arrested and jailed in the Monterey County Jail for attempted murder, deputies said. MPs then launched further investigation into the incident and developed probable grounds for believing that the victim’s son was also involved in the crime, MPs said.

This development was made after a search warrant was issued for a house on the 1000 block of Highway 68 Monterey-Salinas.

James Stolich, 51, from San Francisco, was arrested for conspiracy, attempted murder and elder abuse. He was also placed in the Monterey County Jail, deputies said.

Both had bail set at $2,000,000.

The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office said it would not release the mother’s age out of respect for the victim. They also do not reveal the motive and how she tried to be killed so as not to affect the future of the jury.
