District Attorney Waller seeks $1 million bail for man accused of beheading young wife

WALLER COUNTY, Texas. A Waller County Judge granted the District Attorney’s bail request for a man charged with murder in the horrific death of his 21-year-old wife.

Jared Deekus, 21, was held on $500,000 bail, but District Attorney Sean G. Wittmore argued that was not enough.

He asked for a $1 million bail, citing the “hideous nature” of Anggie Diaz’s beheading at the Waller couple’s home on January 11.

He also cited the defendant’s “aggressive behavior” during a previous arrest for drunk driving two months before his wife’s death. According to court records, Deakus threatened police officer Magnolia and employees of the Montgomery County Jail.

“The defendant continued to exhibit mood swings and aggressive behavior, including window smashing, until he was eventually placed in a blood warrant chair,” Whitmore said.

Records show that Deakus was released on $1,000 bail for drunk driving.

On Tuesday, he sobbed during a bail hearing and at one point the judge had to take a napkin from him.

After hearing both sides, the judge agreed and increased Deekus’ bail to $1 million.

The deputies were called to the couple’s home on Oak Hollow, where they discovered Diaz’s body inside.

Guidry said it looked like she was killed with a kitchen knife.

“This is the world we live in today. It’s a terrible scene,” Guidry said. “Both sides of these families will be changed by this.”

Deekus stayed at home until help arrived. He and his parents, who lived in the house next to the couple, were brought in for questioning, and according to detectives, Deakus later confessed to the murder.

Guidry said there had been previous calls from home about the unrest, but “nothing like that or the level of violence.”

Security camera video from the store where Anggie worked shows Deekus pulling into the parking lot around 11:40 a.m. on the day she was found dead.

He entered the store, took a beer and left without paying, as seen in the video. In the parking lot, he appears to open a beer, take a sip, and drive off.

At her funeral Sunday in Magnolia, Diaz was described by her aunt as an angel sent by God who touched everyone she met with her infectious joy and smile.

Family members said Diaz worked two jobs to pay for a family member’s cancer treatment.

Her colleagues described her as a young woman full of joy and said that she was always smiling.

Diaz and Deekus got married in October 2022 after meeting at her work. Her friends said that immediately after the wedding they realized that something was wrong, but did not expect it to end like this.

“She was happy, very happy with her husband,” Diaz boss Veronica Jimenez said. “But there were days when she was different. She was tired, but I wasn’t sure if she was tired because of work or because of a relationship.”

The GoFundMe page was set up to help raise money to send Diaz’s body back to her native Nicaragua.
