Disney’s Florida Workers’ Union Expected to Reject Company’s Offer

ORLANDO, Florida. – The Disney workers’ union is expected to reject the company’s wage offer at a vote next week, the union said in a statement.

In a press release, union officials said all six unions in the Service Workers Union, which represents 45,000 workers, are recommending that members vote against Disney’s new contract offer.

Disney spokeswoman Andrea Finger said the offer includes the following terms:

  • Wages of $20 per hour for full-time STCU employees without tips during the term of the contract.

  • The wages of actors working full-time without tips will remain at least $5 above the minimum wage in Florida each year.

  • 8 weeks of paid child bonding for eligible full-time actors

  • Increase in average salary by almost 10% during the first year

  • Immediate minimum wage of $20 an hour for select positions including housekeeper, bus drivers and culinary staff.

  • Retroactive pay increases for actors starting October 2022, starting at a minimum of $700 for actors working 40 hours a week.

“This very lucrative offer gives our actors a nearly 10 percent increase on average right away and guarantees promotions over the next four years, with every non-tipped cast member promising a starting salary of at least $20 over the course of the contract, and most see 33% to 46% (increase) in that time,” Finger said.

However, according to the STCU, the proposed increases would include a $1 a year salary increase for most workers, but the increase would not be enough to cover the cost of living for many workers.

“Rent and other expenses have skyrocketed, putting workers in a state of emergency,” a union spokesman wrote. “This offer leaves the clear majority of the workforce behind and offers just a $1 raise for more than 30,000 actors.”

STCU president Matthew Hollis said rising inflation would eclipse that rise, putting many actors at risk.

“(Disney stressed) that some workers will get more than a dollar in the first year, which the union sees as a divide and conquer method,” Hollis said.

STCU members are expected to vote on the contract proposal on February 2-3.
