DFW Weather: Single-digit temperatures and subzero wind chills are headed to Texas by the end of the week. Now is the time to get prepared!

The coldest air since February 2021 will arrive in North Texas later this week.

DALLAS — Bundle up, DFW! Thanks to an arctic front headed North Texas’ way, it’s going to be downright cold in our region this week.

Here’s what we know about what’s headed our way.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Both days will be mostly cloudy, dry and chilly.

Highs will be around 50° — below normal, but very quiet compared to later this week.

The arctic blast

There is no question: It is going to get dangerously cold later this week.

A strong cold front sweeps across North Texas through the day Thursday. Temperatures will hit the 20s by the afternoon, and dip into the teens by the evening.

Winds will be gusting near 45 mph, too, bringing the wind chill down to the single digits through the afternoon and into evening.

It doesn’t stop there, either.

Temps will keep on falling with bitter cold around Friday morning.

Lows will be in the single digits and teens — with wind chills below 0°!

Chances for wintry weather look low at this point, but it is not impossible for some light snow or a wintry mix to accompany the front on Thursday — mainly along the Red River and areas northeast of the metroplex.

You need to start to plan ahead, especially if you are going out of town for the holidays and will not be home until after Christmas. Here’s how to do so.

How long will temps be below freezing?

For DFW, it looks like around 72 hours — that’s from Thursday morning through Christmas morning.

There’s a chance DFW warms up to or maybe a degree or two above freezing  on Saturday afternoon. Even if that does occur, though, it would only be for an hour or two.

How does this compare to February 2021?

While these are the coldest temps we’ve seen since that tragic freeze, simply put, it won’t be as cold for as long.

In February 2021, we spend the better part of 9 to 10 days below freezing. With this event, it will be around 2 to 3 days, depending on where you live.

Also, temps were much colder in February 2021 with the coldest temperatures one of the coldest we’ve ever seen in North Texas at -2°.

Remember: We also saw multiple rounds of snow and ice in February 2021. In fact, at one point the entire state of Texas was under a Winter Storm Warning.

Wintry weather looks very minimal for North Texas and Texas in general with this event.

It does get better…

Look at the 10-day forecast, and you’ll find 50s and 60s returning next week! So just hand on till then!
