DeSantis Commits $100 Million to Recovery from Hurricane Erosion

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Florida (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday allocated $100 million for beach erosion projects and other recovery efforts in 16 coastal counties hit by Hurricane Jan and Hurricane Nicole.

The Republican announced the funding at a press conference in Daytona Beach Shores, which was hit hard by last year’s storm.

The money is part of a legislative package approved by state legislators at a special meeting in December dedicated to post-hurricane property insurance.

Hurricane Yan, a Category 4 storm, hit southwest Florida in late September and swept across the state, causing extensive damage. Then Hurricane Nicole hit in November, hitting the east coast of Florida and making landfall in areas where Yen had caused severe beach erosion a few weeks earlier.
