Denton police respond to nearly 100 icy road crashes, more on the way

DENTON, TX (CBSDFW.COM) — Denton County leaders are warning residents of a potential ice storm in the forecast.

This comes after Denton police responded to nearly 100 accidents on icy roads.

Sand truck crews work around the clock in the city of Denton.

Michelle Lopez ventured to go grocery shopping and said she drove carefully. “I think the roads are treacherous. We just don’t know how to drive in Texas on ice. We don’t have tires for that, we don’t have the patience.”

Another Denton resident also found the roads to be slippery. “They’re actually bad, pretty slippery. We slid here all the way.”

Carter Smith went out for a walk near Denton Square.

The Pennsylvania native, now a student at the University of North Texas, said he was not afraid to fall on the ice. “If you just do it slowly, in small steps, like a penguin, you won’t slip much, and I have already fallen before. I get up again.”

Due to the ice storm warning, Denton County and City of Denton leaders said all of their facilities would remain closed on Wednesday.

There are four overnight heating centers in the county:

Our daily bread at 909 N. Loop 288 Denton and Denton Salvation Army, 1508 E. McKinney Street.

Two others are in Lewisville: Lewisville Salvation Army, 880 Fox Avenue and Relevant Life Church, 331 E. Church Street.
