DeLanda boy dies after accidental gunshot wound

(WSVN) – A 3-year-old boy in DeLand, Florida died in a tragic accident.

Volusia County police officers said he accidentally shot himself with a handgun at a home on Wednesday around 6 p.m.

Officials said the call was reported to a house on Nectarine Road in Daytona Park Estates.

The news shocked those who lived nearby.

“I just got home and it’s sad to hear,” said one of the neighbors. “I think parents have a responsibility because you should at least keep guns safe and out of reach of kids. It’s a tragic story and it shouldn’t have happened.”

Detectives are still looking into the evidence.

An update on the incident will be provided on Thursday.
