Del Valle ISD students visit Tesla and Infineon as part of Girl Meet Engineering Day

Dozens of Del Valle ISD High School girls got some hands-on engineering experience when they visited electric vehicle maker Tesla and semiconductor maker Infineon for Engineer Meet Day.

This week, the groups sat down with Tesla Gigafactory Texas and Infineon engineers to learn all about what engineering is and how they can one day become engineers and leaders.

For many, this was the first time they learned about the technique and saw how it works up close, the county said.

At Tesla’s Gigafactory, one group was working on three projects: a simple engine, a balloon-powered car, and a bridge design. At Infineon, another group learned about the semiconductor manufacturing process through small assignments and then visited a chip manufacturing facility.

Women engineers with many years of experience in the field also spoke to the groups, sharing their life stories about how they ended up in engineering.

Introduce a Girl to an Engineer Day is celebrated at the end of February each year as part of National Society of Professional Engineers’ Week of Engineers. This day is an attempt to introduce young girls to STEM careers and help create a fairer field for male-dominated STEM careers,” says Del Valle ISD.

DVISD says its Office of Workforce Development organized the trip to show girls that if they choose to pursue engineering, they can get a head start in high school by choosing a vocational engineering program starting in ninth grade.
