March 15, 2023

This spring, San Diego County’s seventh Chinese restaurant, Chin’s Szechwan, opens in La Jolla.

Chef and co-owner Ting Tsai has been serving Chinese and Mandarin cuisine at Chin’s Szechwan since the restaurant first opened in Carlsbad Village in 1984. In fact, the first Chin’s Szechwan restaurant opened in 1976 in Hawaii. The family chain has grown to 12 locations over the years, but the remaining branches still in operation include Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, Del Mar, Vista, Encinitas and Oceanside. The company will soon take over the space that has long housed China Chef next door to The Taco Stand on Pearl Street in La Jolla.

Like other outposts, La Jolla Restaurant in China’s Sichuan serves a menu of Americanized Chinese dishes such as kung pao chicken, broccoli beef, walnut shrimp and egg fu yong, as well as traditional Sichuan dishes such as steamed whole fish, yang chow. fried rice, duck with smoked tea, red bean pastry and steamed xiao long bao soup dumplings. The restaurant will open in mid-April for takeaway and delivery during renovations, with a grand opening expected in May.

This spring, Chin’s Szechwan will open at 623 Pearl Street in La Jolla. For more information, visit govisitchins.com.
