Debit card left in Florida robbery leads to arrest

PALM COAST, Florida. “The crime may not pay off, but the authorities say the perpetrator tried.

Authorities have arrested a Florida man who they say broke into a convenience store and took several items while leaving his debit card.

In a video posted by Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staley on Facebook, the suspect told police he left his debit card so he “could come back later and pay” for the items he took.

“I didn’t mean to steal anything, you know, it’s against the law,” he said in the video.

MPs responded to an alarm at a closed Palm Coast gas station in the early hours of Feb. 5, according to a Facebook post.

According to the sheriff, the store owner showed the police the surveillance video, and they also found a debit card with the suspect’s name on the counter near the cash register. Deputies did recognize the man in the video footage of a car burning near a gas station earlier that night.

“He must have really wanted these items to break into the closed convenience store to get them,” Staley said. “Abandoning a debit card does not exempt you from theft or burglary.”

Deputies said they tracked down the man to return the debit card and arrest him for burglary and theft.
