Dallas Cowboys Jones: Wild Card result won’t affect McCarthy’s job status

As the Dallas Cowboys enter the Wild Card round of the NFL playoffs, owner Jerry Jones doesn’t feel like head coach Mike McCarthy will coach his job.

DALLAS. After a second consecutive 12-5 season, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is delighted to see his team again in the NFL playoffs. However, will another loss in the Wild Card round put head coach Mike McCarthy in the hot seat? Jones doesn’t think so.

Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jones was asked about his head coach’s status during his weekly Shan & RJ radio appearance on 105.3 “The Fan” on Tuesday, and he didn’t want to say McCarthy would be a big deal. if Dallas stumbles again in the first round of the playoffs.

“No. I don’t even want to – no. That’s it,” Jones said.

McCarthy, in his third season as Cowboys coach, once again led Dallas to 12 wins this season. One difference for the Cowboys in this 12-win campaign is that they won’t enjoy a home playoff game when the Philadelphia Eagles usurp Dallas in the NFC East.

At 12-5, the Cowboys finished second in their division to the Eagles, 14-3. The second-place record means Dallas is likely to hit the road throughout its playoff run, and that starts with an 8-9 date with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Thanks to the victory in NFC South, despite the loss, the Pirates hold the Wild Card round.

Despite AT&T Stadium closing ahead of the playoffs, Jones is looking forward to the postseason.

“Life could be more fun next year if we win playoff games,” Jones said. “We had a dose of it without winning. Life went on, but when you win them, there is more zest in life, it sounds a little better, the music sounds better.”

To materialize this best interest, the Cowboys will be tasked with doing something they’ve never done before: defeating Tom Brady.

Dallas was 0-5 against Brady during his legendary tenure as a New England Patriots quarterback and went 0-2 against Brady after his move south to Tampa. The Cowboys lost their 2021 season opener to the defending champion Buccaneers and then lost that season’s opener in Arlington to Tampa Bay’s Brady.

Jones is aware of the fact that the Cowboys will face history in a Wild Card game, but he knows that Tampa Bay is more than just a quarterback:

“Come to think of it, we don’t play with Brady. We’re playing Tampa Bay, team. And it’s quite possible that we could make Brady play poorly and the rest of the team will beat us in the tail.”

“And I’m not trying to be nice,” Jones continued. “But we have to play as a team. And this Brady thing has to be sensitive. I know it’s there and I respect it. [The losing streak against Brady] challenges us to do something we haven’t done before, and that is to surpass Tom Brady.”

The Cowboys will have a chance to beat Brady and the Bucks on Monday night at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.
