Dallas County grand jury indicts man accused of trafficking missing Bastrop County teen

A year after Dallas police said they had found a missing 15-year-old near downtown, a Dallas County grand jury indicted a man accused of trafficking her.

Marlon John Theodore Brown has been charged with constantly tracking a minor and participating in criminal activities.

In an affidavit with an arrest warrant, police said he advertised the then 14-year-old missing from her home in Bastrop County in 2019 on several commercial sex websites in Texas and Oklahoma.

It was said that he took her and several adult women to hotels and Airbnbs, which were booked in his name dozens of times for prostitution.

According to police, a tip from a sex-buying man who admitted the teen was a missing child eventually led them to the teen and Brown.

Just last month, a new ad campaign was unveiled along the North Texas highways to encourage everyone to watch out for human trafficking.

“It happens all the time,” said survivor Sophia Strother Lewis.

Lewis, who was sold by her mother, said it could happen anywhere and look like anything.

“When you see people who don’t look you in the eye, they look at the ground. Someone may have everything they need. They make someone pay for it. you see it, you have to say something,” she said.

It’s a reminder that the campaign’s co-sponsor, anti-slavery group A21, along with other advocates, hope they can put more people like Brown in jail.
