Dallas Asian American Community Responds to California Shootout

Locally, in the Dallas area, Asian community activists are heartbroken by the latest news.

DALLAS — At least 18 people have died in attacks at a ballroom in Southern California and a mushroom farm on the coast. Authorities continue to investigate the motives behind the attacks.

Locally, in the Dallas area, Asian community activists are heartbroken by the news.

“The last thing I would like to see is that the Asian community is resorting to arms. The sad thing is that we are not so accustomed to [the use of] deadly weapon when there is a dispute,” said Jonas Park, an Asian community activist.

Park was stunned when he heard the news of the shooting on Saturday at a ballroom in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles, at a Lunar New Year event.

“This guy who shot people used to frequent dance halls. He knew people,” Park said.

Police say Huu Kang Tran, 72, who was suspected of the attack, was a former volunteer dance teacher. While police are still trying to figure out the motive behind these recent shootings, Park spoke about the struggle that often affects Asian communities.

“So many people live in poverty… it’s hard for them to make ends meet. They have problems,” Park said.

Park said he thought the violence might have something to do with the recent mass shootings across the country.

Park said, “Imitation matters, right, so and so, I can do it too.”

Park is now working with local church leaders to help his community and find solutions.

“She contacted members of the community and they set up a hotline. Just by listening to them,” Park said.

In the meantime, we listen and mourn with these families.

“There are no words for the families of the victims. My prayers are with you, sending you the energy of love,” Park said.
