DA Gonzales confident in imminent arrest, deems it premature to seek death penalty

A capital murder case in Texas has brought attention to the potential consequences that the suspect or suspects may face, including the death penalty or life in prison without parole. The case involves the tragic deaths of Savanah Soto, her unborn baby, and Matthew Guerra, which were reported a week ago on Sunday, December 24th.

Law enforcement officials are currently conducting an intensive investigation to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible for this heinous crime. District Attorney Joe Gonzales has expressed confidence in the police’s ability to make an arrest soon, although it is too early to determine whether his office will seek the death penalty in this case.

District Attorney Gonzales revealed that his office has a capital crimes committee, which evaluates whether to pursue the death penalty in specific cases. During his tenure, he has prosecuted over 100 capital murder cases, but has only elected to pursue the death penalty twice. One notable case that went to trial involved Otis McKane, who was convicted of murdering San Antonio Police Detective Benjamin Marconi in 2016.

Gonzales explained that the decision to pursue the death penalty depends on various factors, including the severity of the crime and whether the defendant poses a continuing threat to society. Additionally, the wishes of the victim’s family are taken into consideration.

Emphasizing the importance of justice and accountability, Gonzales assured the public that once the suspects are apprehended and charged with capital murder, his office will do everything possible to hold them accountable. He urged anyone with information about the case to contact the San Antonio Police Department.
