Cucina Urbana Founder Opens Al Fresco Restaurant at Newly Renovated La Jolla Contemporary Art Museum

The hotel company behind the Michelin-starred restaurants Cucina Urbana and Cucina Sorella in San Diego has opened a new bar and al fresco restaurant at the newly renovated San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla.

For the past 27 years, Urban Kitchen Group Tracy Borkum, who runs Cucina Urbana in Bankers Hill, Cucina Sorella in Kensington, Artifact in Mingei, Gold Finch Modern Jewish Deli in Torrey Pines and Cucina Enoteca in Del Mar, Irvine and Newport. Beach has earned a reputation as a leader in the Southern California hospitality industry. Last year, Urban Kitchen Group acquired Waters Fine Foods in Bay Park, which is being used as a new catering kitchen and warehouse. After a year of development, Tracey Borkum and partner chef Tim Colanco have finally opened their market-inspired, contemporary coastal restaurant, The Kitchen, at the newly renovated San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Kitchen is a new 120-seat restaurant set against the backdrop of a historic former residence located in the Gartner Court courtyard of the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art. Now open for breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Sunday, the restaurant includes a nearly 2,500-square-foot garden café with a smaller dining area located in the museum. There is takeaway food, as well as an on-site cafe with coffee drinks and pastries, and a menu of Mediterranean dishes such as swordfish kebabs and fried chicken. Later this year, the space will offer a menu tasting from a separate room called the Sahm Sea View Room. At lunchtime, a four-course menu will be offered for about $65.

The renovated San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art reopened last spring after a $105 million renovation. The vast waterfront expanse features some of the region’s most extraordinary Pacific Ocean views and is home to a world-class collection of contemporary art. Following a major four-year renovation by Selldorf Architects, La Jolla has expanded galleries, an art park and sculpture garden, as well as several rooms that can be rented for special occasions.
