Crosby ISD votes to move to a 4-day school week starting next school year

Crosby ISD is joining New Waverly ISD, moving from five days a week to four starting next school year.

CROSBY, Texas. On Monday, the Crosby Independent School District Board of Trustees approved the transition to a four-day school week starting next school year.

Crosby ISD is the largest county in Texas to make this decision and the first in Harris County.

When the 2023-2024 school year begins, Fridays will be considered student days off, the district said. Faculty and staff will work one Friday a month for Staff Development.

An additional 20-25 minutes will be added to school days to make up for the three day weekend.

Crosby ISD Superintendent Paula Patterson hopes the move to a four-day school week will attract more teachers.

“Our reason is simple and clear,” she said. “We want to find, hire and retain the best teachers in the state for our students. This change immediately made Crosby ISD the best educator location in Harris County. Our move will attract even more outstanding teachers to our students, leading to high academic results. We also believe this move will increase the recruitment of bus drivers who are vital to getting our students to and from school safely and on time.”

Crosby ISD is not the only school in Houston to switch to a shorter school week. New Waverly ISD will also move from five days a week to four starting next school year.

“Geographically, we are right in between four boroughs that are so much bigger than us that they can do much more in benefits and benefits than we can,” said New Waverly ISD Superintendent Dr. Darol Hale. “Everything pointed to it. that’s what people wanted to try.”
