Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey: ‘Housing First’ Plan for Homeless Fails

CORONADO (CUSI) — As we all know, San Diego’s homeless crisis is only getting worse under the leadership of Mayor Todd Gloria, who continues to pretend he’s working to fix the problem. In September 2022, local icon Bill Walton partnered with the Lucky Duck Foundation to draw attention to Gloria’s misfortunes that made national news.

At that time, a record 1,609 homeless people lived on the streets of San Diego.

Fast forward to the present and that number is increasing every month.

The Downtown San Diego Partnership just completed a January 2023 tally that found nearly 2,000 homeless people call downtown streets home.

The only bright spot in San Diego County is the city of Coronado.

Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey is committed to keeping the public safe by keeping sidewalks as sidewalks and parks as parks. This means that sidewalk parking is not allowed in Coronado.

As a result, the city of Coronado has the lowest per capita homeless population in the entire region.

Bailey pointed to San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria’s “Housing First” plan of choice as the cause of San Diego’s uncontrolled homeless crisis. Bailey simply said that Housing First was not working. Bailey also said that the local homeless can be divided into two categories: “those who want help and those who don’t want help.”

Bailey suggested working with those who wanted help and then finding a way to prevent those who didn’t want help from continuing to live on the street without repercussions.
