Congressmen Advocate for Enhanced Border Security

In a recent report by U.S. Homeland Security, it has been revealed that there has been a significant increase in encounters at the Southwest Border. Fiscal year 2023 recorded a staggering 2.4 million encounters, marking a 40% surge from the previous year. This surge has raised concerns among lawmakers, particularly Congressmen Henry Cuellar and Tony Gonzales, who are advocating for stricter border security measures.

Congressman Cuellar expressed his alarm over the daily influx of individuals arriving at the Southern Border, stating that the current numbers are unsustainable. He emphasized the need for enhanced border security and questioned the rationale behind allowing such a large number of individuals to enter the country. Cuellar further highlighted that a substantial majority of migrants who claim asylum will ultimately be rejected by the courts.

Cuellar pointed out that many migrants are exploiting the asylum laws, which clearly state that persecution based on nationality, race, religion, political beliefs, or social class is required to seek asylum. He emphasized that coming to the country for reasons such as seeking employment or reuniting with family members does not qualify individuals for asylum.

While Cuellar acknowledged the complexity of the issue, he proposed different solutions to secure the border. He rejected the extreme positions of completely open borders or complete closure, instead calling for a balanced approach that focuses on robust border security while respecting the rights of migrants and ensuring swift due process. Cuellar emphasized the need for sufficient funding for deportation efforts to promptly remove individuals who do not qualify for asylum.

During an appearance on CBS Face The Nation, Congressman Gonzales also addressed the border crisis, labeling it as an open border crisis. He stressed the urgency of collaboration between the Senate, House, and President to develop a comprehensive national security package that prioritizes the country’s interests. Gonzales echoed Cuellar’s concerns, highlighting the chaos and disruption experienced by individuals in his predominantly Hispanic district, including high-speed chases and school lockdowns.

Meanwhile, the White House has reportedly been working on securing the border and is considering various measures, including stricter standards for asylum seekers and expanding detention and deportation efforts. However, Gonzales cautioned that the details of these measures are crucial and warrant careful consideration, particularly regarding the extent of deportation flights and whether they will be limited to the border or extend to the interior of the country.

The escalating situation at the Southwest Border has prompted lawmakers like Cuellar and Gonzales to advocate for stronger border security measures. As the nation grapples with the ongoing challenges, finding a comprehensive and effective solution remains a top priority for the government.
