Confirm: no. Leaving the ceiling fan on all day won’t save you money on your energy bill.

SAN ANTONIO. As we approach summer, concerns about high energy bills are starting to rise as our air conditioners work harder and harder to keep our homes cool. Most of us know that using a ceiling fan to circulate the air in our homes can save us on our energy bills. But KENS5 viewer Trey Wynand went even further.

Is it true that if you run your ceiling fans all day every day it helps to cut down on your energy consumption as your air conditioner doesn’t have to run as much?

Rodriguez told us the answer was no and told us, “It won’t save energy. First, because you’re using a ceiling fan, and it doesn’t cool or dehumidify your home, which is what an air conditioning system does. It helps dehumidify your home, which makes it uncomfortable.”

CPS Energy claims that ceiling fans cool people, not rooms. And that you shouldn’t leave your fans on all day if you’re out and about or in an unoccupied room.

So no, it’s not true. If you run your ceiling fan all day every day, it won’t cut your energy consumption.

Rodriguez also said checking insulation, good windows and sealed doors will help keep your home cool as the summer months approach.
