Community continues to mourn death of former Cameron High School athletes

It has been about two weeks since three young people were killed in a car crash following a police chase on Highway 190 between Cameron and Milan.

Fabian Beinaum, 19, Davarius Beinaum, 20, and Malik Thomas, 21, died in a plane crash in late January. Three of those killed were former athletes from Yoe High School in Cameron. Those who knew them say they were successful and well-loved members of the community.

People who knew the three say they loved fast cars, and this may have ended up being the cause of their death. Tragic deaths that changed the face of society.

“You can definitely tell that everything is not the same, that it just seems like everyone is moping,” says Destiny Weathersby.

Weathersby knew all three victims. She dated Thomas for five years.

“Cameron is Cameron, but it’s not the same. Especially when you lose people like them,” adds Weathersby.

Weathersby says he and Thomas recently broke up and said it was “the worst thing because there were a lot of things I wish I had said to him before it happened. And I started blaming myself and everyone around me. Because, you know, the last time I talked to him, he told me that he loved me. And I, like, couldn’t tell him that back.”

Milam County Sheriff Mike Clore says Fabian was over the speed limit on US 190 between Cameron and Milan and lost control of his car while trying to overtake an assistant who was trying to stop him.

“I want people to know that they were role models. They wanted people to look up to them,” Weathersby says.

The loss continues to be felt by Weathersby and has left a hole in the community.

“Each boy belonged to all of us. These are our children. Our babies,” said one of the speakers at the vigil dedicated to Fabian, Davarius and Thomas.

“I feel like I finally realize that (Thomas) is gone. I can’t help it. But I still think about him every day and it’s hard. It’s easy, it’s tough,” Weathersby says. .

The crash is still under investigation.
