Commission members voted to recall Tarrant Appraisal District Council Chairman

TARRANT COUNTY (CBSNewsTexas.com) On Tuesday, Tarrant County commissioners voted to recall the chairman of the Tarrant County Board, two weeks after Keller City leaders did the same, citing transparency and trust issues in the agency that determines property values.

The county chiefs’ vote appeared to be due to a desire to retain voting power over who would take the seat, a process that was thrown into a legal gray area with Katherine Wylemon’s departure from office before retirement could be formally play.

Under the state’s tax code, such resignations resulting in a vacancy could be seen as granting the remaining TAD board members the authority to nominate a replacement for Huelemun from a list of candidates provided by tax authorities such as counties, cities, and school districts.

However, once the recall is complete, it is the tax authorities that can vote to select a new board member. The county has received formal notice of the recall from TAD.

People who appeared for public comment before the commissioners on Tuesday urged them to continue the recall.

“I don’t see how the tax authorities can stand a board that seems to exist only to approve every decision of the lead auditor,” George Dodson said.

TAD’s attention increased last year after a district official complained to a state agency about local real estate agent Chandler Crouch protesting property taxes on thousands of homeowners, as well as the subsequent removal of top expert Jeff Lowe on the subject.
