Cleanup continues after fatal train derailment in Splendor

The East Montgomery County Fire Department says the truck driver involved in the collision with the train has died.

HOUSTON. Track repairs and wagon removal continued Tuesday morning following the fatal train derailment in Montgomery County on Monday morning, according to the Splendora Police Department.

The driver of the 18-wheel truck died when his truck was hit by a train while it was crossing the railroad, police said.

It happened shortly before 7:30 am on the Eastex Highway near Midline Road.

Splendora police said Tuesday morning that Midline/Rebel Road is only open to emergency services after they complete repairs. U.S. Highway 59 North Frontage Road will also remain closed until the end of the day until late in the evening.

What happened during the train crash?

Splendora police said the train was heading south when a large platform crossed the tracks and was hit. The 18-wheeler was dragged along the rails for half a mile.

The East Montgomery County Fire Department said the man driving the 18-wheeler involved in the train accident has died.

Police said there were no guards or lights at the intersection where the crash occurred, but the truck driver needed to have a line of sight to see the oncoming train.

Eastex Freeway was closed for several hours while crews worked at the scene.

Views from Air 11 showed that several vehicles had derailed near the crash site. Splendora police said about 15 vehicles were derailed in the crash.

Protective brigades also responded to the scene, but there were no reports of leakage from the covered wagons. Crews removed spilled diesel fuel from the truck.
