Cincinnati Mayor’s NFL Playoff Taunts Go Viral – Urges QB to Take Paternity Test

The NFL Playoffs are quickly drawing to a close, and the Super Bowl is only a few weeks away.

Toward the end of an NFL season, there is always a storm of emotion: fans are sad that the season is coming to an end, fans are outraged that their team is either eliminated from the playoffs or missed the playoffs, players whose teams still want to live to see if they can make it to the next game, players who have already been knocked out of the playoffs are likely just disappointed.

The NFL playoffs can also evoke vindictive pettiness in the form of trash talk. This is hardly noteworthy when it comes from players or even coaches.

But when does the mayor of the city come into play? That’s when things can get a little edible.

The Cincinnati Bengals will head to Kansas City for a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship game against the Chiefs, and there is no lost love between the two teams – or cities.

Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Purewal tweeted a positively viral (the video had over 4 million views as of early Saturday) clip of him impaling the Chiefs and their star quarterback.

Let’s take a look:

“Good afternoon, Cincinnati,” Pureval begins. “I have a proclamation from the mayor’s desk.

Have you watched the NFL playoffs this year?

“Let it be announced: as the Cincinnati Bengals head to Burrowhead Stadium for their second consecutive AFC Championship game. Whereas in last year’s game, the Bengals scored more points than the Chiefs, resulting in a Bengals win and a Chiefs loss. Whereas Joseph Lee Burrow, who is playing 3-0 against (Chiefs guard Patrick) Mahomes, has been asked by officials to take a paternity test to confirm if he is his father.”

Burn … perhaps?

Listen, Purewal delivers this joke with all the conviction of a Bengal tiger trying to speak Chinese. And although the delivery left much to be desired, so did the material.

First, wins and losses are not quarterback statistics. Attributing a 3-0 record to one player, even someone as important as quarterback, is almost insulting to the rest of the team. Wins and losses are team stats, not individual stats.

Secondly, this whole Barrowhead joke (playing at the Arrowhead stadium where the Chiefs play, and Barrow’s own name) is a bit premature considering that Barrow played exactly three games against the Chiefs. Maybe once he helps lead his team to a 32-3 record (like Tom Brady in the New England Patriots against the Buffalo Bills), you can joke around. For now, this is all a bit premature.

Finally, are we really doing “who’s your daddy?” fun in 2023? Maybe it’s a return in the cultural zeitgeist, but it looks painfully lazy. Remember, Barrow and his Bengals may never have lost to the Chiefs, but the Chiefs have also won the Super Bowl. There are actually two, which is two more than the total number of Super Bowls won by Bengals.

Sure, the Bengals have a Super Bowl loss, which at least puts them ahead of the Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans. These four teams have the infamous NFL distinction of being the only four franchises to never even play in the Super Bowl.

But Purevale’s trash talk wasn’t aimed at the Browns, the Lions, the Jaguars, or the Texans. He’s been targeting a team that has won two Super Bowls and is using a quarterback who actually has a shot at replacing Tom Brady as the greatest quarterback of all time.

“Whereas the Cincinnati have been on the path of destiny all season, fighting to beat anyone that stands between them and winning the Super Bowl. And while Kansas City is named after a neighboring state… which, you know… is just weird.

“So now, I, Aftab Purewal, Mayor of the City of Cincinnati, hereby proclaim January 29, 2023 Day Must Play Us Day in Cincinnati. Thank you.”

The Bengals, who often use the phrase “Who Dey” as a battle cry, and Mayor Purewal clearly drew the ire of Chiefs fans with this viral stunt.

In fact, Mahomes’ wife, Brittany Mahomes, criticized Pureval on Twitter for the stunt.

“WEAK. and embarrassing,” she tweeted in response.

“I heard that the mayor of Cincinnati was trying to bring in some smoke, which is weak as hell,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said, according to the New York Post. “You don’t have to answer. KC has class. Cincinnati has Jerry Springer and no rings. See you on Sunday.

Apparently, not only the supporters of the Chiefs did not like this trick. Bengals fans didn’t appreciate the insults either, with many repeating that the video was either A.) a cringe (no doubt true) or B.) providing unnecessary message board material for the Chiefs (probably true).

Pureval has actually apologized for its rejected SNL parody, citing its “competitive juices” for a meme-worthy video.

The Chiefs’ game against the Bengals will take place at the end of Sunday’s championship.

In the earlier game, the San Francisco 49ers will go to play the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
