Child shot in the head while playing with a gun with friends

The child was reportedly with a group of friends playing with the weapon when it exploded.

SAN ANTONIO — An 11-year-old boy has been taken to hospital after being shot in the head while playing with a gun, the San Antonio Police Department said.

The shooting occurred around 9:30 a.m. Friday in the 700th block of North San Marcos, at the Terraces at Haven for Hope residential complex.

Haven for Hope alumni live in an apartment complex, although anyone who is financially eligible can also live there.

Police are working to gather more information, but they have confirmed to KENS 5 that the wound was self-inflicted. The child was reportedly with a group of friends playing with the weapon when it exploded.

Police Chief William McManus said the father thought the gun was secured and that the boy had no access to the weapon; It was reportedly hidden in a desk drawer.

The boy’s father is with him when they are taken to the hospital. Police said the child was breathing and could communicate.

Brooke Kaminsky was walking near the apartment complex with her baby in a stroller when she noticed a heavy police presence. She wonders how reliable the gun the child found was. But Kaminsky is hopeful that the boy will make a full recovery.
