Check: Is CPS Energy Calling Customers and Threatening Power Outages Due to Unpaid Bills?
They say they call to remind customers if their bills are overdue, but don’t turn off service if they’re not paid.
SAN ANTONIO – Unknown numbers appear on your phone. We get calls all the time, but it’s not always easy to tell which ones are real and which ones are scams.
Many people are afraid of power outages, especially if they have overdue bills. We received a message from KENS5 viewer Lorraine Chavez who said, “Could you please check if CPS Energy is calling residential customers telling them that their electricity is out because they have not received payments in the past.”
QUESTION
Does CPS Energy use a third party to call customers about power outages due to unpaid bills?
SOURCES
- Milady Nazir, spokeswoman for CPS Energy
ANSWER
WHAT WE FOUND
Nazir told us, “CPS Energy does not call customers to threaten to cut off their services. CPS Energy calls to remind them they are in arrears. But we do not threaten to shut down the service over the phone.”
Nazir also said to follow them on social media. She said, “Because this is where we send warnings when we notice fraudulent activity. We actually have a dedicated page on our website. They can go to CPSEnergy.com/scammers.”
So no, it’s a lie. CPS Energy does not use a third party to call customers about power outages due to unpaid bills.
Nazir also told us that customers should go to their website and go to “Manage my account” to see how much they owe and learn about different payment methods. They can also call them for a balance at 210-353-2222 and use any of their websites to sign in.
